Hard to believe this piece hasn’t received more claps, Brian. What you’ve described with Amway is a microcosm of what has happened in our country. Those gathered were being sold something that the speakers knew would never be attainable for the majority. Yet, they preached it anyway because they would benefit greatly by the scheme. It was a self-serving system, designed to create more wealth and power to feed the insatiable greed of those at the top. And they wrapped it in patriotism and family values and told those who joined that they were special. The flags and lighting and music all played on the crowds’ emotions and emotion diminishes rational thinking. It was classic indoctrination. The majority didn’t understand this or were so blinded by the trappings of success they bought the lie that it was achievable if they just worked hard. Seems to have worked on many gullible people. Very insightful piece.
